OUR VINEYARD Unique terrior combined with meticulous viticultural practices means that from vintage to vintage the Politini vineyard produces what are widely regarded as among the best grapes in the King Valley. We can pinpoint three main factors that help us produce exceptional fruit. Ours is a cool climate vineyard, situated on a north-west facing spur which looks down the King Valley through a gap in the hills. This means the vineyard continues to receive full sunlight long after nearby vineyards are left in shadow. Temperature profiles relating to the vineyard’s elevation and topography provides frost protection and means that our vines are always the earliest to bud-burst and our grapes the first to ripen. The overall result is highly fruitful vines, as well as grapes that are renowned for their excessive colour, which acquaints to intense fruit flavours and robust tannins. Generally, the best fruit in the King Valley comes from hillside sites with low water-retention. Our vineyard straddles a spur with fine red-granite soil that is free-draining, meaning that we are easily able to control the amount of water the vines receive. With a hands-on approach of monitoring the requirements of the vines day by day, we keep water application to a minimum. Restricting water stresses the vines, reducing vegetative growth and causing them to put all their energy into their reproductive mechanism, the grapes. It also ensures that berry size is kept small, concentrating varietal characteristics and aromas. A true innovator and micro-manager, Salvatore (Sam) Politini was the first vigneron in the King Valley to apply the Scott Henry trellising system. He stuck to it meticulously, devoting substantial amounts of hand-labour to training the vines. This trellising system, combined with intensive pruning, is yet another factor that ensures our vines receive maximum exposure to sunlight, and that vegetative growth is kept to a minimum, resulting in excellent quality fruit.
