OUR WINEMAKER Chilean-born Luis Simian is a second-generation wine-maker with French heritage. In Chile, Luis’s father (also named Luis), worked as a wine-maker in one of the country’s longest established wineries, Valdivieso. After the Simian family migrated to Australia to escape political unrest in 1971, Luis’s father continued to make wine in South Australia’s riverlands. While Luis’s knowledge of winemaking is underpinned by his family’s industry background, today he combines this heritage with technical expertise gained from having completed degrees in both chemistry (Monash University) and winemaking (Charles Sturt University). Luis joined Politini Wines when he married Sam and Josie Politini’s second daughter, Bianca. Prior to this, he worked as a winemaker for Miranda Wines, Brown Brothers and Buller Wines. A highlight of his winemaking experience includes time spent at Stags Leap in the Napa Valley, where he was exposed to the winemaking of Warren Winiarski — the first winemaker to produce Californian wines that seriously rivalled those of Bordeaux. Luis’s philosophy is that first and foremost, the wine is made in the vineyard. His aim is to ‘capture the fruit in the bottle’, where it can express the Politini vineyard’s exceptional terrior, along with the cool climate elegance and finesse for which the King Valley is renowned. |
